Private GP care for patients here

Southport sits at the end of the line in more than one sense. It is a coastal town with a single road and rail route in, and a population significantly older than the national average — a combination that makes travelling for healthcare harder than in almost anywhere else we cover.

A consultation that happens at home removes the journey entirely. Twenty minutes with a GMC-registered GP costs £40, available 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, by secure video or telephone.

Where a blood test is needed, Liverpool is around eighteen miles down the coast, though a referral can go to whichever provider is easiest for you.

Local healthcare context

Southport and Formby District General serves the town, with specialist services drawing toward Liverpool and, for some pathways, into Lancashire. The town's position on the coast means its catchment is effectively a half-circle — there is no population to the west.

The demographic picture is the defining factor here. Southport has one of the older age profiles in the North West, built up over decades as a retirement destination, and that shapes almost everything about local demand. Long-term condition management, polypharmacy review, falls risk and frailty are the everyday business of primary care in this town.

Older patients are also the group for whom travel is hardest and for whom a missed appointment costs most. Someone managing four conditions and eight medications needs continuity and time, and a ten-minute slot delivers neither.

The town's seasonal tourism economy adds a second layer, with a working population in hospitality and retail whose hours rarely align with a surgery's.

Health themes in this area

Medication review is a recurring need. Patients taking several long-term medicines often have not had anyone go through the whole list in years, and twenty minutes is enough time to do it properly.

Long-term condition monitoring — blood pressure, cholesterol, thyroid, kidney function and diabetes — makes up much of the routine demand, and most of it can be managed remotely with a blood panel.

Bone health matters in an older coastal population. Vitamin D deficiency is common, and DEXA scanning is worth considering after any fracture from a minor fall.

Free NHS options nearby

Free routes worth trying first

  • Pharmacy First — pharmacists across Southport, Birkdale, Ainsdale and Churchtown can assess and treat sore throat, earache, sinusitis, impetigo, shingles, infected insect bites and uncomplicated urinary infections in women. Free, no appointment
  • NHS Talking Therapiesself-refer without a GP, free. Depression and anxiety in older people are substantially under-recognised, and this route is open to anyone
  • Free NHS flu and pneumococcal vaccination for older adults and anyone with a long-term condition, plus the shingles and RSV programmes for eligible ages — all free and all worth taking up
  • The NHS Health Check, free every five years from 40 to 74
  • NHS 111 for urgent problems that are not emergencies

Urgent and emergency care

Southport and Formby District General serves the town, with specialist services drawing toward Liverpool and, for some pathways, into Lancashire.

Chest pain, stroke symptoms, sudden breathlessness, a fall with a suspected fracture, or new confusion in an older person go there or to 999 — not to a remote consultation.

Free screening

Bowel screening from 50, cervical screening from 25, breast screening from 50 — and self-referral for breast screening after 71, which a great many people do not realise continues to be available.

Common questions from patients here

Where would I go for a blood test?

Randox Health Liverpool — around eighteen miles down the coast, though a referral can go to whichever provider is easiest for you.

And ask your NHS GP first. If the same test is free locally, that is plainly the better answer and we will say so rather than send you on a journey.

And a scan?

Vista Health's Liverpool City Centre diagnostic centre on Duke Street.

Check the NHS wait before paying, and ask about Right to Choose, which lets you select a different NHS provider at no cost.

I no longer drive. Does that rule me out?

The opposite — it is one of the strongest reasons to use a remote service.

Repeat prescriptions, blood pressure discussions, medication reviews and results conversations all work perfectly well by telephone. None of them requires a journey, and for a town with this age profile that is the practical point.

Can you review all my medications?

Yes, and for anyone on several long-term medicines it is one of the more useful twenty minutes available.

Send your repeat prescription list in advance. Interactions, duplications, and medicines nobody has questioned in years are common findings.

Your NHS GP and your pharmacist can both do this free too, and we will point you there if that suits you better.

Can you help with bone health after a fall?

Yes — and a fracture from a fall from standing height is important information.

It is one of the strongest predictors of the next one, and it usually qualifies you for a free NHS DEXA scan. Ask about that before paying for one.

Do you cover the surrounding areas?

Yes — Birkdale, Ainsdale, Formby, Churchtown, Crossens, Banks, Hesketh Bank and Tarleton.

Can you send a prescription to my usual pharmacy?

Yes — electronically, to whichever you use. You collect it, or your usual pharmacy delivery arrangement continues as normal.

What can you not do?

Examine you — no blood pressure, no chest, no assessment of a swollen leg or an unsteady gait.

Which matters in an older population. Falls, confusion and sudden deterioration need seeing in person, and we will say so immediately.

And we never prescribe opioids or stimulants remotely, nor benzodiazepines or z-drugs for ongoing use — a point that matters particularly in older people, where these carry a real falls risk.

Questions about our service

How quickly can I be seen?

Same-day access is usually available, from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week. You choose a time that suits you rather than waiting on hold at 8am.

Will I see the same doctor each time?

Yes. Care is led personally by Dr Mohammad Khan, so you are not passed between clinicians. Continuity is the point of a small practice: someone who knows your history and is listening attentively rather than working through a checklist.

Can you see my NHS records?

Yes, with your consent. We can access your Summary Care Record during the consultation, so your current medications, allergies and significant history are in the room. That means fewer questions you have already answered elsewhere, and safer prescribing.

Are you trying to replace my NHS GP?

No. We are not here to replace GPs, only to support them. Your NHS practice remains responsible for your ongoing care, and with your consent we write to them after the consultation. We are useful when you need to be seen sooner, or want more time than a standard appointment allows.

What is included in the appointment?

Twenty unhurried minutes and a comprehensive assessment. A written treatment plan is included, along with any prescription, sick note or referral letter arising from the consultation, at no extra charge.

How much does it cost?

£40 for 20 minutes, self-pay. Membership is optional and never required. Priced for fairness, because we are not here to charge extortionate amounts for access to a doctor.

What does “treatable online” actually mean?

It means the diagnosis can usually be made from your history and photographs, and that treatment can be arranged safely without examining you. Where a condition is not marked treatable online, it is because examination is the diagnosis — listening to a chest, feeling an abdomen, examining an ear or a joint — or because a procedure or device is needed.

Can you prescribe antibiotics?

Yes, where there is a genuine bacterial infection — cellulitis, impetigo, bacterial urine infections, confirmed strep throat. We will also frequently tell you that you do not need one. Most sore throats, coughs, colds and earaches are viral, and an antibiotic gives you the side effects with none of the benefit.

What if the GP cannot help with what I need?

If your problem turns out to be genuinely outside what we can do remotely, the doctor will tell you straight away, point you to the right service, and refund your fee in full. We would rather do that than fill twenty minutes to justify the charge.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call 999 or go to A&E — do not book an online appointment and do not wait for a reply to an email. For urgent problems that are not emergencies, NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, online or by phone, and can direct you to the right service.
