Bowel Cancer Screening

A home kit through the post, one sample, two minutes. Proven to reduce deaths, and around a third are never returned.

Breast Screening

A mammogram every three years from 50, and self-referral after 70. The one screening programme where the trade-off is genuinely debated.

Cervical Screening

A smear test from 25 to 64. The interval lengthened because the test improved — and that alarmed a lot of people unnecessarily.

AAA Screening

One ultrasound, once, for men in the year they turn 65. Ten minutes for a condition that is otherwise silent until it kills.

Diabetic Eye Screening

Photographs of the back of the eye, for everyone with diabetes from 12. It does not replace your regular eye test, and people confuse the two constantly.

NHS Health Check

Free every five years from 40 to 74 in England. Covers much of what a paid panel does, and fewer than half of those invited take it up.

Lung Cancer Screening

A CT scan for people aged 55 to 74 who have ever smoked. Finds most cancers at stage 1 or 2, against roughly a third normally.

Antenatal and Newborn Screening

A cluster of programmes, not one test. Each is offered, not imposed — and "higher chance" is the phrase that causes the most unnecessary fear.
