Yes, where there is a genuine bacterial infection. We prescribe antibiotics for things like cellulitis, impetigo, bacterial urine infections and confirmed strep throat.
We will also frequently tell you that you do not need one, and that is not us being unhelpful. Most sore throats, coughs, colds, earaches and sinus infections are viral. An antibiotic does nothing for a virus, and taking one you do not need gives you the side effects with none of the benefit.
Antibiotic resistance is not an abstract concern. It is why some infections are now genuinely difficult to treat, and every unnecessary course contributes.
What we will often suggest instead: what to expect and over what timescale, symptom relief that actually helps, and — importantly — what should make you come back.
A delayed prescription is sometimes the right answer — issued with instructions to use it only if things have not improved by a set point. It reduces antibiotic use without leaving you stranded.
We will not issue an antibiotic simply because it has been requested. A prescription is never guaranteed, and if you would like one regardless of whether it is indicated, we are not the right service.
