What it means
Surgical removal of the structure named.
- Appendicectomy — removal of the appendix
- Hysterectomy — removal of the womb
- Cholecystectomy — removal of the gallbladder
- Mastectomy — removal of a breast
- Tonsillectomy, polypectomy, lumpectomy — all removals
Watch for "partial" or "sub-total", which mean only part is taken — an important distinction, particularly with hysterectomy, where whether the cervix was removed determines whether you still need smear tests.
In practice
On consent forms, operation notes and discharge summaries.
Why it matters
Check exactly what was removed, particularly if partial. People are frequently unclear years later, and it affects later screening and treatment.
Ask for a copy of the operation note if you are unsure — you are entitled to it, and it is the definitive record.
